Stay On Top Of Things
It may be tempting to relax this year, but you must continue to strive for good grades. Meeting deadlines is the key to a successful year. Never miss a deadline. Remember, colleges will see a final transcript and can overturn their admissions offer based on those grades. All admissions paperwork should be filed before the end of your first semester or Christmas break.
Utilize Your Counselor
This year work closely with your counselor as you work through the college process. You will apply for college admissions, scholarships, and federal financial aid. File all paperwork on time. Allow plenty of time for your counselor and teachers to write their recommendations and submit your documents on time. Retake the ACT or SAT I if you believe you may improve your score – significantly. Keep copies of every document. Here is a month-by-month guide to help get you through your senior year.
August
-
Request to review your official transcript and cumulative GPA.
-
Make sure you meet the requirements of all colleges on your final list where you will be applying.
-
Post a large calendar somewhere you will see it every day and list all admission and scholarship deadline dates one week before their actual due date.
-
Check continuously with your counselor concerning any new scholarship information.
-
Use the information in your college portfolio to finalize and type your college resume and fill our college applications.
-
Continue to update your resume as new opportunities occur during your senior year.
September
-
Give all recommendation forms to your counselor and teachers. Make sure you have completed your portion of these forms before handing them over. As a courtesy provide due dates and addressed, stamped envelopes to your teachers that have agreed to write your recommendations.
-
Your counselor also needs all secondary school report forms.
-
Register for the October or November ACT or SAT test if you need to retest.
-
If you decide to apply Early Action or Early Decision, you should note that those deadlines are usually due in October.
-
If possible finalize your essays this month or in early October.
-
If you are applying to a private college, request a CSS form from your counselor.
October
-
Take your college entrance test (ACT or SAT I).
-
Submit Early Action and Early Decision applications.
-
This is your final chance to attend the college fairs in the area, if you are still undecided about a particular college.
-
Continue to attend in-house college representative visits at your schools. This will give you the final chance to discuss scholarships, housing and final application questions.
November
-
Submit your college applications this month. Don’t forget to check the Common Application and the Historically Black Colleges Common Application.
-
Attend financial aid workshops at your school or in the area. Pick up a financial aid application or FAFSA. The FAFSA cannot be mailed before January 1st but you should begin collecting the information needed to complete the document. Second semester will be the time to devote your total attention on finalizing financial aid. You can also apply on-line if you prefer.
December
-
Early decision and Early Action acceptance notices arrive this month. Take time to finalize any January 1st deadline documents.
-
If it is December or later and you have not completed all of the steps listed above….What are you waiting for?
January
-
Complete and mail your FAFSA form or apply on-line. If you qualify for a grant, grant money is distributed on a first come first serve basis. Once the grant money is gone the government will offer you a loan. Grants do not have do be repaid, loans do. Apply early and get the free money!
